Central Arkansas women’s basketball team began a four-game homestand with an 87-66 victory over the West Georgia Wolves on Wednesday night at the Farris Center. The Sugar Bears improved their record to 11-8 overall, 4-3 in ASUN play, and 5-1 at home.
Shae Littleford led Central Arkansas with 17 points, followed by Bree Stephens with 16 points. Cheyanne Kemp and Laylah Reese each added 15 points. The team scored 46 points in the paint and recorded 19 assists on 35 made baskets.
The game started evenly, with both teams exchanging scores early in the first quarter. Central Arkansas established a small lead through inside plays by Kemp and a three-pointer from Jenna Cook. After the media timeout, Central Arkansas’s defense tightened, closing the first quarter on a 9-1 run and leading by nine points. Contributions from Cook and Reese off the bench helped maintain momentum.
Central Arkansas extended its run into the second quarter, increasing its lead to as many as 17 points after a series of unanswered baskets. West Georgia responded to reduce the deficit but could not bring it within single digits before halftime. At the break, Reese led all scorers with nine points, while five Sugar Bears had at least five points each. West Georgia shot only 33 percent from the field in the first half.
In the third quarter, both teams found success offensively; Central Arkansas scored most of its points near the rim while West Georgia hit four of six three-point attempts in that period. Despite these efforts, West Georgia was unable to cut significantly into Central Arkansas’s lead.
A three-pointer by West Georgia opened the fourth quarter but was quickly answered by an 11-0 run from Central Arkansas that pushed their advantage to more than twenty points. Kamryn Griffin contributed during this stretch with key baskets following offensive rebounds and turnovers. Littleford added five consecutive points late in this run.
The Sugar Bears maintained control for the remainder of the game and did not allow West Georgia to close within twenty points again. Stephens and Littleford each scored seven in the final quarter; Central Arkansas assisted on seven of nine field goals without committing any turnovers during that span.
The win ended a five-game winning streak for West Georgia.
